Sweet Rewards: Dental Group offers candy buyback for Halloween
Children will receive cash or an electronic toothbrush when they bring in their treats.
Trick-or-treating is a cherished tradition for many children and their parents. But one local dentist is reminding families to be mindful of how those sticky confectionary treats can impact their children’s health.
California Dental Group, with offices in Glendale, Eagle Rock and North Hollywood, is offering a candy buy-back program for children 14 and under. For every pound of candy a child brings in, the office will reimburse the child $2 or an electronic toothbrush.
Eating too much candy can have short-term and long-term effects, said Dr. Kamran Sahabi, founder of California Dental Group. Too much sugar can make a child restless, cause weight gain and lead to tooth decay. Hard candy can cause cracks in teeth.
“A lot of the emergencies we see after Halloween are candy-related,” Sahabi said.
The dental group hopes to see a large turnout for the buy-back program, which takes place from Nov. 1-5, 2007
Pain-free for the mouth and the wallet
California Dental Group provides free treatment Friday as a service to the community.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD – Christopher Beavers was in pain.
An impacted wisdom tooth – long ignored – had pushed into an adjacent molar and cracked it. Infection was about to set in.
“I was told four years ago I should have got it done,” the 28-year-old said. “But I said, ‘No. It doesn’t hurt now.’”
It hurt on Friday (Sept. 28), until he finally got it treated at California Dental Group’s Emergency Treatment Day, a free service provided to the community at the practice’s North Hollywood location.
Beavers was one of more than 20 patients to take advantage of the free dental work – from fillings to extractions – provided by Dr. Kamran Sahabi, founder of California Dental Group.
“We do it to give back to the community,” Sahabi said. “It makes us feel good.”
Catalina Lopez, 26, of North Hollywood, felt good after she left the Magnolia Boulevard office. Like Beavers, she also had a wisdom tooth removed.
Sahabi said the practice’s Emergency Treatment Days usually bring in patients who don’t get regular dental work done. Neglected teeth can often present more serious situations.
That’s why the dental practice hosts several community awareness events each year – from its emergency treatment days to educational outreach that includes a candy buyback program the week of Halloween. Children can cash in their trick-or-treat candy, a potential source of tooth decay, for $2 a pound.
“It’s our obligation to do something for the community,” Sahabi said. “As a dentist, it’s important to educate people on good oral hygiene. As a human being, it’s important to share the blessings that God has given us.”
Geronimo Moran of Pacoima was happy to have been able to get his loose crown fixed for free. The process at California Dental Group was quick and painless, he said.
“I normally hate going to the dentist,” he said. “But they make me feel at ease.”
California Dental Group hosts Emergency Treatment Days throughout the year at its four locations in North Hollywood, North Glendale, South Glendale and Eagle Rock. The dental practice specializes in cosmetic, emergency and general dentistry.

California Dental Group celebrates official re-opening
A new digital x-ray system marks a new beginning for local dentistry.
EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – California Dental Group helped launch a new trend in dentistry this month, when its Eagle Rock office hosted an official re-opening ceremony to celebrate the success of its new digital x-ray system and other patient- and environmentally friendly technology.
California Dental Group, now with four locations in L.A., opened the Eagle Rock office in 2004. Its new technology signifies a trend that is better for the environment, better for patients and better for those who would otherwise be working with toxic substances.
“Our new digital x-ray machine eliminates the need to use caustic chemicals in a darkroom to develop negatives,” said Dr. Kamran Sahabi, founder of California Dental Group. “The process uses less radiation, so it is better for the patient, and our digital viewing screens allow us to get a quicker and better look at condition of the patient’s teeth.”
Dexis technology delivers high-quality digital imaging that can take full mouth x-rays in less than 5 minutes, compared to the traditional method that can take up to 25. Because it eliminates the need for film and chemicals, and reduces exposure to radiation, the new technology is more environmentally friendly and allows for more time with patients, too.
More than 50 people attended the re-opening ceremony Oct. 3 at 4701 Eagle Rock Blvd. Among those in attendance were Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce President Denise Miller and Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huiszar, who helped to cut the ribbon. A Certificate of Recognition from the California State Assembly was awarded to Dr. Sahabi for his years of service to the community and his dedication to the environment.
